As you and your children begin getting ready to go back to school I’d like to wish for a fun, safe, healthy and wonderful year. Let me remind you that this could be an easy year if you plan on it. Children could be nervous about going back to school, especially if they are new on campus, if it’s their first year, or if they are having a new teacher. Allow me to share some ideas for this new start.
- Remind your child that teachers are prepared for different situations; they will make an extra effort to make sure that each student is safe and comfortable.
- Let your child know that they will see previous friends and make new ones; this could encourage them and make them look forward to going back to school.
- Help your child to begin a bedtime routine. Getting enough sleep is crucial for children to be healthy and to perform better in school.
- Create a bedtime routine, consider taking a shower, reading with them, turning off electronic devices and playing calm music so they can relax better.
- Make sure your kid knows how to contact you for any emergency or important situation. Prevention is the key.
- Before going to school make sure your kid has a healthy breakfast, this will help them to perform and concentrate better during the learning hours.
- Consider sending a nutritious lunch or snack to eat during school hours and don’t forget a good beverage.
- Choose a backpack with enough compartments and wide padded shoulder straps that won’t hurt their back.
- When driving to school, leave on time, wear seat belts and focus on the excitement of the day.
- When walking to school, use a safe route and be careful when crossing the streets.
- Encourage your child to be polite, to make friends and to have fun.
- Teach your child to let you or the teacher know when feeling uncomfortable in a specific situation. Be open to listen to their request.
- Help your child to be empathetic when it is needed.
- Be on time to pick up your child, this will make them feel safe.
- If you choose an after-school program, inquire about the staff.
- At home make sure to establish time for homework or studying.
Make the most out of this time of the year. Some children are excited about going back to school, others might think as a student of mine, “no vacation lasts forever, so, I guess we have to go back!”
