Getting ready to go back to school is one of the hardest things we all face. Kids struggle to do this not only because summer break is over, but also because a new routine is about to begin. They don’t know who they’ll meet, who they will have lunch with and because the school building seems overwhelming to them. We must understand that fear. Were you there once?

I was. I changed schools often, not because I was failing, but because my Dad’s studies or work required us to move. Each time, we had to find a new school, that meant, new building, new cafeteria, new teachers and new classmates. If the school year was good, I would make new friends. And that, my friends, was the hardest part of all.

We are social beings, but I was a very shy girl. I had loving parents, younger siblings and a whole lot of strange people in front of me. Now I realize I wasn’t the only one in that situation, there are children, nieces and nephews, as well as siblings who struggle in the same. Don’t be harsh with them. Try to understand what they are going through. Be thoughtful, be caring, be empathetic. We are all different, therefore we can’t expect anyone to feel the way we feel.

As we start a new school year, know that someone else has been afraid. I have cried out of nervousness. I have been stressed and I have felt alone. But you know what? That’s what drives me today to continue, that’s what pushes me to go on. So, don’t be afraid to face your fears, they will disappear once you confront them.

Let this year be a wonderful school year. Learn as much as you can and grow. Life is full of opportunities, let this one help you to become a better version of yourself.
